What is the career river framework?

I came up with this concept just after lockdown and captured it in a popular thread, that started with:

I’m rejecting the career ladder metaphor in favor of the career river. Here’s why:

1. The ultimate goal of the career ladder is: reach the top.

The ultimate goal of the career river is: reach your ocean - a thriving, wide-open ecosystem fed by other rivers to explore.

Since then I’ve run workshops and held career chats exploring this idea and people absolutely light up when they begin to consider their careers as flowing rivers. Pulling together research, expert interviews and frank conversations, “Explore Your Career River” is a weekly dose of inspiration for anyone interested in a more liberating framework for your work life than climbing a ladder alone.

About me

My own career has zigged and zagged from working in reporter and editor roles at a newsroom to audience development consulting and managing journalism collaborations. At every turn, however, I’ve found coaching and supporting others in reaching their goals tremendously fulfilling. Outside of work, my wife and I have three amazing kids (and two guinea pigs and a toy poodle), and I devour books at every opportunity.

I’m writing this newsletter because I believe we all need a more flexible approach to our working lives, one that embraces growth and addresses change. I hope you’ll join the conversation!

Happy navigating,
Bridget
